CHRISTIANITY IN TALMUD AND MIDRASH

Author: R. TRAVERS HERFORD
Publisher: Ktav

Augmented Edition With A New Introduction by Dr. Daniel J. Lasker

Product Description
Robert Travers Herford’s Christianity in Talmud and Midrash is a classic work. It was the first attempt to bring together in one venue every single possible rabbinic reference to Jesus of Nazareth and to his followers, the early Jewish-Christians (identified as the rabbinic minim). The book, divided into two main sections reflecting the two topics presented, translates every selection, comments upon it, and draws conclusions as to the significance of these selections. An appendix provides the original Hebrew and Aramaic texts so that readers can check the originals for themselves. The book has been republished a number of times over the years, testifying to its importance and staying power despite newer discussions of the same materials. A new introduction, discussing the value of the book, is provided by Daniel J. Lasker.

R. Travers Herford (1860-1950) was an English Unitarian minister whose research interests were rabbinic literature in general and the Pharisees in particular. He approached these topics with respect and with few of the negative preconceptions which characterized much of western Christian Hebraism of his period.

Daniel J. Lasker is the Norbert Blechner Professor of Jewish Values at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev where he teaches in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought. He has written extensively on the Jewish-Christian debate as well as on the subjects of Jewish philosophy and theology, and Karaite Judaism.
