Lamm's uplifting message is simple: Don't give up. Fight back. Because hope is so nebulous, however, he ends each chapter with lists and rules summarizing his advice. In order to pinpoint the illusive nature of hope, he concludes the book with a "Ten-point plan that can turn hope into reality," a formula he pledges "will lead you to where you want to go." Lamm's style is loaded with overused truisms and self-help jargon which, although maybe effective in face-to-face counseling, give his writing a patronizing flavor.Still, because he appeals to an ecumenical audience searching for spiritual relief in a world that often seems hopeless, Lamm may provide the kind of guidance many are seeking. |
